The subreddit scam is run by scammers

Main Post:

The rule I violated is cause I wasted scammers time. Awwww wow they care about scammers time.

That whole subreddit is made by scammers.

Top Comment: r/scams is meant to inform people about scams, so scambaiting is off topic. And there's actually another good reason they discourage scambaiting over there: it can be a risky endeavor if you don't know what you're doing. People have had stories of pissing off a scammer who then adds their number to a list and has them utterly bombarded with calls and messages. Other times, the scammer catches onto the fact that they're dealing with a baiter, and switches to a different scam- often by claiming they only scam people because they're desperate to provide for their family, but other switcharoos are possible, and people have fallen for those after thinking they outsmarted someone. The idea is, the longer you interact with a scammer, the greater the odds are that you fall for their scam (or one of their secondary or tertiary scams), and people going to r/scams for help are NOT the kinds of people who should be scambaiting. Edit: And looking at your post, no, it's better for people to learn the general types of scams rather than the specific names of certain scammy companies or profiles. Scammers create new domains every day, and they all get taken down just as quickly. Buildfire or whatever its called probably won't be around by next week, so it's far more important for people to know why Buildfire is a scam, so they can apply that knowledge to the next shady company they come across.

How can I tell if something is a scam or is legitimate if I personally can’t tell the difference?

Main Post:

Sorry if this doesn’t belong here.

There’s just so many people trying to screw each other over out there and get as much money in their pockets before someone catches on to their schemes and they get in trouble. And as someone who doesn’t know a lot about the vast world of finance and hearing terms like crypto, NFT’s, Roth IRA, etc, I get confused and don’t know who to believe and don’t know if X is legit or if Y is not.

Top Comment: If someone contacted you on social media or via text message about it, it’s a scam.

The scam jobs have gotten (a bit) smarter...

Main Post:

Was recently approached by text for a remote job at Anocca AB (an actually really cool and legit company, y'all should look them up). It had all the hallmarks of a fake check scam: no video interview, salary that was too good to be true, quick response after the "interview," etc. The person talking to me claimed to be Anocca's HR manager, and his name and profile picture matched the info on the company website. After finding the real HR manager's email online, I sent him an email, and sure enough, it wasn't actually him.

When I was looking through this subreddit, I didn't see any posts about the possibility of impersonating a well-known company. So to everyone who came to this subreddit and to this post because they want to know if their job offer is legit, be aware that a reputable company will never, ever hire someone the way these scam jobs will. If you see something like this, a scammer is probably impersonating a reputable company and trying to use their image to make themselves seem trustworthy. And if you ever hear anything that even mentions the Telegram username mikael_anocca, block them and report them immediately.

Stay vigilant, my friends!

Top Comment: I see these all the time. It’s not any smarter than your average scam. “I was approached by text for a remote job” says it all really, anything after that is inconsequential. Scam and move on.

What's a new scam trending in 2025 that most people don't even know about yet?

Main Post:

2fa, change your passwords, don't fall in love with a random text that starts with "heeeey"... yes we are falling for the same poor cyber hygiene tactics as much as ever , but what are some different scams? What new ways have popped up that everyone should add to their arsenal of paranoia and hyper vigilance?

**newly scammed and looking to be less of a target in the future. This is the acceptance part of my grieving process 🥲

Top Comment: This is technically off topic, but I'm going to allow it. Hopefully, others will read this and not make the same mistake.

I am living the scam

Main Post:

I'm sure you've all heard of the scam where someone hires you for remote work. They mail you a check to "buy equipment" and then suddenly the deal is off and you need to mail the equipment back, and then the check bounces.

Well, I never thought I would see anyone get suckered by this. Well, my wife responded to a remote work want ad for a customer service rep and they did a Teams interview with her. She obviously figured out the scam pretty quickly once they got to the whole "We'll mail you a check. Here is the equipment you need to buy" part of it.

At that point the only thing they got out of her was her name and where she was located (no exact address). After forcing the guy to call us on Teams and hearing his Russian accent (when he claimed he was from Australia, and his name was not even remotely Russian), we just ignored him completely.

Well, the bastard is persistent. Fedex delivered an envelope with a bank check for almost $4000. The guy is committed. He looked up my home address and overnighted me a fake check for almost $4000. Impressive.

So, the guy claims he's in Atlanta. The Fedex envelope has a California return address, and the issuing bank is a small credit union in Florida. And the company on the check is a construction company who's website is "under construction."

SO MANY red flags here.

And the amount of the check will not cover the cost of the equipment. So, I assume this will be a "You need to cover the difference while we get new check Fedexed to you right away! But buy the equipment ASAP!"

I called the issuing bank and they're very interested in this. They want the check and gave me an address to mail it to.

So, my questions now:

  1. Do I send them the original check or a copy of it?
  2. Should I contact anyone else about this? Local law enforcement?

I'm still laughing over the whole thing and wondering how people fall for this.

Top Comment: I would report the scam here --> https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/ And I would send the check to the bank. They will confirm it's a fake. There is no chance the check is good, so sending it won't put anyone at risk but the scammers. My ex-husband had a similar scam done to him many years ago when he listed furniture on Craigslist. The person claimed to be in England and needed it shipped to Texas; the furniture was $1000 and the check he sent was for $5000. The package came from Nigeria, not England. With all of this, my ex still thought it could be legit, which I was just flabbergasted at. So I went to the issuing bank (which luckily had a local branch) and confirmed it was a fraudulent check.
